National Women’s Day on 9th August commemorated the national march of women on this day in 1956 to petition against legislation that required African persons to carry a “pass”. The women sang a protest song Wathint’Abafazi Wathint’imbokodo! “You strike a woman, You strike a rock” which has come to represent women’s courage and strength in South Africa. During the month of August we get to celebrate and honour the amazing women in our lives, their strength, courage, commitment and love.
A strong woman is a gift to the world, and each of us have those special women in our lives who inspire us, guide us and love us beyond measure. Whether it’s your mother, grandmother, sister, aunt or mother in law, these women’s strength continue to shape our lives.
As part of our Women’s Day celebrations we held a competition and asked our fans to tell us about the women in their lives that inspire them. Reading each post warmed our hearts and as we knew it would be, it was impossible to single out just one. A random draw chose Jacques Naude as the prize winner but in a twist that left us all in tears, Jacques asked that we give his prize to a special little girl Alexis.
Alexis’s sister Jeandre entered the competition with the following entry:
“My inspiration is my 4 year old sister Alexis, who was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma cancer earlier this year. Through everything that little body has gone through, from chemo to surgery, she ALWAYS has a smile on her face. Brave little girl, fighter and my inspiration…”
The Alexis HOPE Foundation is a registered Non Profit Organisation, and was established to raise awareness about childhood cancer. Please follow and support this brave, beautiful girl’s journey.
Alexis came to the bakery with her sister to collect her prize and we got to meet this sweet little girl who keeps smiling through multiple surgeries and chemotherapy. Alexis you have inspired us to always keep smiling no matter what.
To each and every women, Happy Women’s Day/Month, you are all phenomenal.
